As with most other MMORPGs on the market the Elder Scrolls Online uses an attribute and stat system that helps improve your character's overall performance. Something that is unique to ESO though is their "resource management system" that uses a pool of Stamina, Magicka, and Health where your ability cost comes from these pool of resources instead of casting an ability and waiting for it to come off of cooldown. This is what gives ESO a refreshing combat experience that is very free flowing and doesn't use "waiting to come off cooldown" as part of the experience. Instead you can cast your abilities as much as you want until your resource pool runs out. There you will use various methods of resource recovery to refill your resource pool. This system is completely in your control and allows for you to sustain your resource pools based on your playstyle and of course your situation. In this guide I'm going to show you how this stat and attribute system works so you can be in control of your resources. THE BASICSBefore we dine on the details let's see how your stats and attributes are distributed. All of your stats have a baseline that you work up from. These numbers will vary depending on your race, class, and gear. To improve these numbers you invest your attribute points into magicka, stamina or health. Other ways of improving these numbers is with a mundus stone blessing, class and racial passives up to level 50, improving the quality of your gear, potions, and food buffs.
CORE ABILITIESThis is something that isn't talked about much in the ESO community so I am going to dedicate some time to give a rundown. Core abilities are movements that aren't active or passive abilities, but still cost Stamina to execute. Sprint, sneak, block, bash, break free, and dodge roll are all your core abilities that are part of the movement and combat system and will contribute to your resource sustain. Sustain is managing your attributes so that you don't go to complete zero. Zero health means you die, Zero magicka won't allow magicka abilities to be cast, and Zero stamina means you can't cast stamina abilities and you cannot use your core abilities. Learning when to dodge, block, bash and break free is the difference between an average player and a highly competent player. Managing your core abilities is a learned skill that takes time to develop, but once you have this down your resource sustain is going to greatly improve and you will have more resources at your disposal. RECOVERYAll of your attributes can be recovered either by waiting over time or using methods that can help speed up the process. Your recovery stats are going to be lower than all of your other stats since those values tick every 3 seconds. To increase your Health recovery running an ability that has lifesteal, or enchanting a weapon with a lifesteal glyph will help keep your health from dropping too fast. When it comes to Magicka and Stamina recovery heavy attacks is the route you want to take. Staves can recover magicka and melee weapons recover stamina. Casting a heavy attack requires holding down the light attack button for it's full animation. The trouble with heavy attacks is that they are complicated to weave into your combat rotation when you first start out. Learning how to properly weave heavy attacks into your rotation is part of sustain, and the difference between life and death at times. DAMAGE AND PENETRATIONDamage and Penetration both reduce the health of your opponent, but they do them in different ways. Weapon and spell damage reduces the health of your opponent after all resistances and immunities are calculated. Critical damage deals at least 50% more damage on top of your normal weapon or spell damage. Weapon and spell penetration bypasses your opponents resistances and armor and directly attacks the health. Penetration has a cap of 18,000 in PVE, but has no cap in PVP. The fastest way to take down your opponent is by getting their weapon and spell penetration resistance close to or directly to zero, then letting your weapon, spell and critical damage take out the remainder of your opponents health. While stacking critical chance to be above 50% is the best way to increase your overall damage, critical damage now has a cap of 125%. Building up your main attribute, respective damage type, getting above or near 50% critical chance, getting close to or at critical damage cap, and having your penetration between 8k-12k is how you can maximize your damage in your tooltip. Reaching this pinnacle damage requires a combination of an optimal DPS build, seamless light and heavy attack weaving, knowing your rotation, and mastering animation cancelling to improve both your weaving and rotation speed. This is the biggest hurdle that all ESO players have to work through if they desire to reach top tier end game and get the best rewards the game has to offer. This is why many players parse on training dummies to practice their rotation and weaving, and to check their tooltip stats to make sure they have optimal damage. Taking that practice and implementing it during an intense vet dungeon or trial run is where true mastery of damage forms. RESISTANCEPhysical and spell resistance protects against weapon and spell damage, as well as status effects tied to weapon and spell damage. Penetration and bleed damage can bypass all resistances and armor, so knowing when to dodge and block is key to staying alive. Critical resistance protects against critical damage only. A thing to note on critical resistance is that only players can deal critical damage, so it's only useful in PVP. Unlike crit damage, critical resistance does not have a cap and can be increased by gear bonuses that increase critical resistance. You can increase your physical and spell resistance by putting points into your Health attribute and by putting points into your Armor via Champion Points.
