One of the great things about the Gpose menu is that it has an entire section dedicated to lighting, however this lighting isn't always the best way to utilize lighting for that sexy pic. Today we're going to delve into the world of Photography and understand lighting from a professional standpoint. Our focus will be on natural and artificial lightning, and going over the different types we have available in FF14. GPOSE LIGHTINGWithin Gpose itself we have access to 3 different light sources, and when used right can create incredible shadows and effects. The lighting withing Gpose is positional lighting, meaning that the light source will start wherever your camera is positioned. So the closer you are to the subject the brighter the light will be, and the further you are from the subject the dimmer the light will be. You have 3 sources of light to work with from this menu so you can really get a lot out of it, but it's also easy to overdue it. Each light has a setting for the strength of the light, with 1 being the dimmest and 3 being the brightest. There are also color sliders on each light so you can change the color of the light as well. In general you really only need 2 lights max if you are going to utilize Gpose lighting, otherwise you'll have issues with sharp lighting and washed out colors. Gpose lighting is ideal for poorly lite areas, night time sessions, certain interiors, and when trying to get that "magazine" effect for portraits. INTERIOR LIGHTINGInterior lighting is the most consistent lighting in FF14 as it's not affect by any weather changes outside, nor is it affected by the day/night cycle. If you're looking to replicate a specific effect with your photos then you'll be spending a good amount of time indoors. The main thing to keep in mind with interior lighting is the size of the room. The smaller the room the more reflective light you'll be dealing with from nearby surfaces. The color and intensity of interior lighting is not universal either. Some building and rooms in FF14 will have different light intensities and shades of artificial light. When taking into account things like fireplaces, candles, and torches you can get even more out of interior lighting without much legwork on your end. If you're looking for a more natural form of interior lighting caves with sources of open flames are an option as well, especially if you're looking to play with shadows and contrast. Indoor lighting can be a bit subtle at times so don't be afraid to add some Gpose lighting if you need to. NATURAL SUNLIGHTNatural sunlight is probably the best lighting you'll get in the game, and it comes in many forms in FF14. Sunlight is not the same color and intensity in the real world, and the same applies in FF14. A great example is the La Noscea terriory, which is a series of islands both large and small. The sunlight in La Noscea changes from zone to zone to give it it's own uniqe feel, which is accurate of the real world. Islands tend to have varying biomes, and these biomes are shaped by the tectonic plates, climate, wind, and the amount of sun they get. With Eastern La Noscea you have this amazing beach sunlight that makes you feel like you're in the coral reef of Australia, while just a short ride away you have more broken sunlight when getting thick into the island jungle. The type of sun you get in La Noscea isn't going to be the same type of sun you'll get in Thanalan, which is comprised mostly of desert landscape, which has adopted a rather orange hue thanks to the abundant harsh sunshine. Being a Desert dweller myself I can contest that the sun you get in Las Vegas is not the same kind of sun you'll get in California's Bay Area. With the day time cycle being longer than the night cycle you have some great opportunities with natural sunlight in your Gpose, especially at sunset. MOONLIT LIGHTINGThe moon provides little light during the hours of darkness, allowing for the shadows to take over. Take advantage of the cool colors that the moon provides, or get funky with party hour lightining under the night sky. The natural light that comes from the moon is softer than the sun so if you don't want too much harsh light make like a vampire and wait for that white ball to rise above the Eorzean skies. If the moon is too dark for you there is also rainy or cloudy weather you can use, even during the day, to dampen your gpose with shade. Just be mindful of how limiting taking photos in the dark can be and be sure that you get the most out of the lighting. SPECIAL EFFECTSThis is where things start getting fun. Depending on your job (class) you can get some amazing lighting from your own battle effects! These can take your gpose to the next level as you can get creative with action poses. If you're running a magic based job then you'll have even more fun than the rest of us. Just remember that job actions which require a target will demand the use of a striking dummy. Striking dummies can be purchased of the marketboard, or you can craft them (with one exception) yourself! The only non-crafting striking dummy is the Old World variant, which is only obtainable with Centurio seals in Ishgard. Sadly striking dummies are outdoor only furnishings so you'll need to decide what time of day and what weather you'll want to do battle effects on. Also keep an eye out for certain local that have their own unique lighting effects. A great example is Costa del Sol in Eastern La Noscea, particularly at night. When the sun sets on the coral hugged beach the coral reef itself begins to glow vibrant pastel hues that look amazing when using the /waterfloat emote.
